In the 19 th century period, Families from Germany, Italy, Spain, France and Belgium moved to Nicaragua to set up businesses with money they brought from Europe.
They established agricultural businesses such as coffee and sugar cane plantations, and also newspapers, hotels and banks.
Immigrant Total is less than 1% of the population.

In the 1880's, Germans were invited to settle in the coffee growing region in the northern highlands.

The northern cities of Estelí, Jinotega and Matagalpa
 have significant fourth generation Germans.

The discovery of gold in Matagalpa in 1840 attracted a rush of immigrants of Germans, Americans and British.

The Selva Negra Mountain Resort built in 1975 up in the mountains of Matagalpa. It's in a coffee area next to beautiful hills covered with virgin cloud-forest.

Selva Negra is attended by its owners, who are descendants of German settlers that came to this region in the 19th century.
The German design can be seen in the interior of the rooms and the restaurant, where one can find many old photos, newspaper articles, tools, and other items that give an impression of how the Germans got here and became coffee growers.

English, Spanish, and German are spoken in the Matagalpa area.
